A personal highlight of the PhotoIreland Festival, seminal photographer Glen E Friedman presents a collection of his work at Light House Cinema this evening. Organised to within an inch of its life by Aidan Kelly at CandyCollective, the show and following Fugazi film are well worth the five sheckles being requested. A truly inspirational and opinionated character, Glen is sure to have you thinking about far more than the photos he takes during the Q&A session. More info here.

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

tools_of_the_trade-600x400

Opening tonight at South Studios is a fantastic show with a great nugget of an idea. Getting loads of brilliant photographers to take original shots, ‘Tools Of The Trade‘ sees the resulting photos exhibited alongside the cameras which actually made it happen, with the photographers’ help of course. A great show which again is part of the awesome PhotoIreland Festival, make sure to make it down and see it this evening. I’m almost sure it runs for a couple of days but the festival site is down at the moment. (more…)

HOME, is a group show featuring some great Irish photography. The location is a grand old Georgian House which is basically a shell at the moment, its interior is rough and ready with layers of history and wallpaper inside, that will be brought back to life with this show. Featuring: Joe Sterling, Noel Bowler, Lorraine Tuck, Johnny Savage, Lorna O’Brien, Richard Gilligan, Eoin O’Connaill and Christine Redmond, the exhibit will be part of Photo Ireland, Irelands first international photography festival.

2 years in the making, the PhotoIreland Festival is almost upon us. Starting 1st July and running for 10 days there’s over 30 separate events spread right over spaces all across the city featuring the finest Irish and international talent. Fair play to the organisers of this, they’ve managed to pull together a hugely innovative, interesting and eclectic variety of projects, exhibitions, workshops and screenings. Make sure you make it down to some and support it.

‘Fuck You All’ Dublin

offshoot3_slides-6

As part of this year’s PhotoIreland Festival, Aidan at CandyCollective has managed to secure a visit to Dublin by one of the greatest photographers out there, Glen E. Friedman. I’ve been fortunate to meet Glen before and he’s a man not to be missed, or messed with. His no compromise approach to his work, strong opinions and direct political actions have made him respected and revered around the world so don’t miss this amazing chance to meet the man, see some of his shots on display and see the Fugazi documentary ‘Instrument’. A bedroom full of Balenciaga pre Fall and Charlotte Gainsbourg shot by Meoldie McDaniel….. the line up for the first ever digital cover of Another Magazine. Balenciaga and Charoltte are best buddies with the design house looking after her wardrobe on her new album tour, IRM. Actually they pretty much dress her for everything and probably make her pyjamas too. For those not so fashion literate pre Fall is an extra season slotted in to work the industry even harder and make clothes that are especially expensive and exclusive. That said, Gainsbourg looks amazing and sounds amazing on her tour, which I jammily caught in Montreal.

picture-1

With over 5,000 US soldiers dead in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, Ashley Gilbertson’s project for the NY Times ‘The Shrine Down The Hall’ documents the rooms left by those who laid down the lives. Beautifully captured, the details in each of the frames have you investigating the space for clues as to the type of person they were. To think this is repeated thousands of times across the States is pretty insane.

Abandoned images become found objects when happened upon by Philippe Roucou and M Cherie. Objects Trouves, now in it’s second series, is a collection of 7 silk scarves screened with images of anonymous polaroids. The subjects range from an unmade bed, to a concert, to a cityscape or the leaves of a tree. The photographs provoke stories that are given the opportunity to continue by being found, reformatted and worn. Rocou is an accessories designer and Cherie, an artist. The scarves are available online from Montreal concept store Reborn, with the B series arriving in October.
