Just as Sarah Lowry proclaimed at her Pecha Kucha talk last April, Sandra Backlund also loves textiles. She loves them so much she was never really bothered with selling them, until this season, when she has finally gone into production with a limited range of pieces. Her original process to date has consisted of creating building blocks from natural materials to transform and distort the silhouette, also referred to as three dimensional collage knitting. Her respect for textiles and handicraft skill has situated her in the industry as a stand-alone experimental ethical designer. So from working alone in her studio in an improvisational manner, she has now taken on an Italian manufacturer and new materials to produce architecture for the body.

Thanks so much to everyone who made it down to another sell out Pecha Kucha Night at The Sugar Club. 12 presentations and a documentary made for a lively, almost boisterous, fun evening which is still playing out in my hangover making it not such a Good Friday. The final Pecha Kucha Night is Thursday 3rd June so hope you make it along. Have a great bank holiday weekend.

PKN5 : Tomorrow night

A quick note to anyone coming along tomorrow night to the 5th / penultimate Pecha Kucha Night Dublin at The Sugar Club. Doors open at 7pm and first speaker will be on a little earlier due to the amount of presentations we have lined up for your enjoyment. There will also be a screening of the Areaman documentary ‘140 Characters’ so it’s sure to be a great inspiring evening. With only 2 events to go before we wind up this successful series to focus on other events, we hope you can make it down.

For anyone interested in staying on until the very early hours (think 4am) of Good Friday then get your tickets for the annual Long Good Friday here, it promises to be crazy with Burlectro a go go.

Featuring 12 individual presenters and a special screening of Areaman’s ‘140 Characters’ documentary, there are few better ways to spend a soft Spring evening, and all for a fiver. Hopefully we’ll see you there, click here for a much larger version.

Koochy Kucha

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

How time flies eh! It only seems like yesterday that we got the go ahead to bring Pecha Kucha Night to Irish shores and already we’re up to 4 and planning our 5th edition on April 1st. Our partners and friends on the project, Irish Architecture Foundation, have started posting some of the presentations from the first events so why not while away a couple of minutes the odd time enjoying the diverse ideas and musings put forward.

Pecha Kucha Night :: Thanks

pk_feb2010_041

Thanks so much to everyone who ignored the greasy weather and made it down Thursday night for what a great Pecha Kucha Night. A sold out crowd, apologies to anyone who got turned away, got treated to a wealth of presentations from the insightful to full blown ginger exploitation. What’s more, we managed to raise around 1300 euro which has been donated to the Irish Red Cross Haiti appeal.

pk_feb2010_07

And when we mentioned it to the international Pecha Kucha people they decided to get all the monies made in PKN’s all over the world in February and donate it to the relief effort. We’re delighted.

Hope to see you down The Sugar Club on Thursday night. All money made on the door goes direct to Haiti so come down, have a drink, get chatting and do some good. Cheers. More information here.
