Honda let it shine

As usual Honda have come out with another great ad, this one filmed in the desert. It’s a nice touch that they’ve taken over the whole vimeo page to show the ad off, and find out how it was done here

It’s great when a manufacturer goes one step beyond with their website and gives you real insight into how they think, work and what makes them unique. One fantastic example has to be that of Vitra, the makers of furniture classics such as the work of Eames, Girard, Albers, etc. Aswell as the standard fare you’d expect covering the beautiful products they carry, the site’s Magazine section is always worth a few moments with articles on elements of their business / ethos / designers / etc. alongside articles on design, architecture, exhibitions and more. Jasper Morrison’s Picture of the Month is also worth a regular click for a rare snapshot from their point of view.

Street-come-gallery artist Kaws has just put the web all aflutter with news that he’s about to drop a 4 foot edition of his seminal Dissected Companion toy. Before you go wanting one best you sit down so I can tell you the price. Yep, in order to own this soon-to-be-design-history piece of pure vinyl heaven you’ll have to part with 378,000 yen, that’s 3900 dollars. Might sound a lot but if you’ve sold a kidney and manage to get your hands on one either at Original Fake (Japan) or through his website you can buy 2 back as they generally double overnight!

Speaking of 100’s… Celebrating their 100th anniversary this year, Selfridges in London have worked with some of the biggest established and upcoming names to create original products in their signature yellow. Coca Cola, Paul Smith, Toy2R, Kidrobot x Kozik, Dualit, Mulberry, Moleskine, Marc Jacobs, Converse, Pantone and more have all got involved and helped stock their concept store. Personally I’m digging the Coke bottles and the Dualit toaster. Guaranteed sunshine every morning.

Street artist D*Face has been in Melbourne lately for The Big Mouth Project and while he was there he offered to D*Face his host, Lifelounge’s, headquarter building with some his iconic stencils. The results are fresh and friendly, click here to see a time lapse of the piece taking shape.

‘La noche de la fusion’ is the latest show from the only Gary Baseman. Describing himself as a pervasive artist, painter, tv/movie producer, toy designer and humorist you can probably see that he’s not the shyest guy in the world. We found this out the hard way a couple of years back when he spoke at Electric Picnic, talk about an maelstrom of mayhem but in a good way. Anyway, his latest gallery event opens May 2nd here and don’t expect warm wine and limp finger buffets. Gary’s characters will be brought alive larger than life with costumes accompanied by fire performers, samba dancers and much, much more.

Toy is a new kind of agency with some good old-fashioned principles. That is to partner one of their great illustrators with one of the many briefs that come their way. The results are solid, varied pieces which exude a real sense of wanting to do right by the client aswell as creating something unique. It’s great to see such a good bunch of talented people getting together to work as well as play. Might be the reason they call it Toy. Watch out for 10 questions with these guys soon.

Scrabble, YES!

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Wow! These new ads for word based board game Scrabble are certainly creating a new image for the brand, in fact they are completely BONKERS! Would love to have been in the room for this pitch. Tracing it’s influences from early animation through 60’s underground comix right up to the latest street art they are a joy to behold! Seriously though SCRABBLE? Brilliant!

Well done Mattel and Paris based agency Ogilvy & Mather, and obviously Wizz for the animations.
