What’s in a name

Monday, September 28th, 2009

With a name like The Tenderloin Project, you’d expect the associated images to be, well, tender. But names don’t really care about that sort of thing. The images and videos of the project reflect the harsh life on the streets of the Tenderloin area of San Francisco.  In their own words it’s an “ongoing artistic endeavor focused on one of San Francisco’s most marginalized neighborhoods, The Tenderloin. Utilizing the interactive mediums of photography and film, we aim to capture a compelling and honest portrait of this diverse community.

FREE art that doesn’t break the Banksy

riotcoppers

With 400 thousand people making it to Bristol over the Summer to see the solo show of Banksy, it’s testament to the effect he/she/they have made on peoples’ perceptions and opinions of street art. So much so that the local goverment is considering a public vote system as to whether certain pieces of urban art should be kept or painted over. Banksy’s work are clever, inspired pieces challenging big issues, some an original take using familiar visuals and some are kick-yourself-they’re-such-simple-ideas but they got their first.

If you’ve managed to nab one of his pieces over the years good on you, sit on them and they’ll serve you well aesthetically and financially. If not, get yourself over to here and get some reasonable resolution images for you to print and use yourself. Instant street art to adorn the walls of your humble adobe.

The Animated GIF is Dead, Long Live the Animated GIF

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Jaime Martínez’s Animated gif series breathes new life into an old bit of early internet magic. These photos are mesmerizing and hypnotic. I keep going back to his site to see these micro movies, with wobbling trees and women drenched in wine. Now what more do you need? Get over there and have a look.

The Origin of the Specimens

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Richard Barnes explores the role of the museum in contemporary culture and the artifacts  there within. His Animal Logic photos are taken in a natural history musen, but show the specimens in awkward poses as life goes on around them. Great stuff, check out his Unabomber photos too, fascinating stuff.animallogic09animallogic08animallogic10

The masterful Dave Kinsey’s latest print ‘Duality II’ is a faithful reproduction of one of his strongest recent pieces. Available tomorrow at a random time, although usually around 5pm Irish time, it will sell out fast.

While you’re there why not have a look at the stunners by Irish artists Chloe Early and Conor Harrington. Both are produced, incredibly, through CMYK screenprinting which, having bought one before, I can assure you doesn’t compromise the quality so maybe shed some sheckles for one.

BLASPHEMIES, MONSTROSITIES, & OTHER PERVERSIONS

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

broandonnellyWe’re loving Brian Donnellys latest show in the Show and Tell Gallery in Toronto. The work stands as monument to egotism, destruction, and above all the selfish whims of a creator. Without thought for consequence, Brian eradicates his subjects’ extremities with primer white, replacing them with zoological alternates that bring the viewer to question his motives.

Mentioned only a couple of days ago, the FAME Festival produces some exceptional pieces for people to buy. Up first is this killer self portrait screenprinted print by photographer JR. Seemingly the effort that went into producing it were exceptional so grab them while you can, his prints are up there with Banksy’s in terms of people chasing them.
