Lister’s Got Blisters (I Bet)

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

If you happen to be in London tomorrow (Thursday) evening or over the next few weeks, do make it your business to check out the latest (and I think, greatest) print event so far this year at Pictures On Walls. Australian artist Anthony Lister has hand painted 100 superheroes which have then been overprinted to produce some superspecial killer artworks. The results of this epic achievement will be on sale from the show opening and are sure to go fast (think immediately). Anyone fancy being an art mule send us a message. More pics here (click for the gallery).

And finally, here’s a very cool little film of Anthony’s recent Berlin visit.

Pivot Dublin Reacts to World Design Capital Bid Shortlist!

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

After news broke of Dublin being shortlisted we immediately got a reaction from the team behind Pivot Dublin. Bob Grey from Red&Grey, who was responsible for designing the bid document, had this to say:

“Absolutely delighted. The bid is proof that we have the resources to create value and enable change in our city. We now need to make sure that we use this potential to make a real difference. Our main goal from the beginning was for people to understand the value that design can bring to our everyday lives and that still remains the goal.

It took a huge effort to get to this point, so a big thanks to everybody who has helped along the way. Now to the next stage which will take an even bigger effort. This is something we all need to get behind because in the long run it is something that effects us all. I am looking forward to whatever task lies ahead and am in no doubt that we can win it.”

Hear Hear and well done to all the team!

Interactive Design With Heart & Seoul

Friday, June 17th, 2011

Jean-Christophe Naour is a French interactive designer working in Seoul on some pretty impressive projects across all sorts of digital media. How he realises such complex challenges so beautifully I’ll never know, I was lost at dPaint for the Amiga back in the days. From icon design projects to full blown interactive walls and real-time reactive concert graphics this guy is well and truly on it.

Don’t You wish These Guys Were Friends With You!

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

Another incredible charming, uplifting and really, really cool installation in NYC at the moment from those purveyors of incredible charming, uplifting and really really cool installations – Friends With You.

FWY’s Rainbow City has landed to help celebrate the opening of the new 10 block long second section of the High Line park in New York, Miami’s Finest have brought 40 monolithic, stripey and colourful air-filled sculptures to NYC where it bounce and delight in 16,000 square foot lot 30th Street and 10th Avenue in the Chelsea art district until July 5th. The site also includes a pop-up shop in which limited edition products designed for AOL will be available. If you don’t know about the High Line project go have a read, its really inspiring. Also the identity was created by none other than Pentagram’s Paula Scher, here is a case study of the work she has done so far.

And as if that wasn’t enough (and lets face it the candy coated greatness of FWY always leave you wanting more) Sam and Arturo are also filling the The Hole Gallery with their first solo NYC show. Ahhhh, feels so good!

Savage Beauty

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

With just one month left to go I’m still hoping that some amazing opportunity/ excuse will come up for me to get to New York in time to see the Alexander McQueen tribute at the Met. Savage Beauty honours the designer who brought his collections of craftsmanship and tailoring to life with performance art, when others were conforming to catwalk presentations. Each season was a new narrative imbued with emotion and imagination. Production designers for McQueen’s fashion shows Sam Gainsbury and Joseph Bennett, were enlisted as the exhibition’s creative director and production designer and over 100 looks were selected to celebrate the designers amazing creativity and contribution to fashion history.

Irish Times Cartoonist Martyn Turn(er)s 40

Monday, June 13th, 2011

When you talk about Political Cartooning in Ireland one figure casts a (literally, he is very tall) giant shadow over the rest. Martyn Turner, cartoonist for the Irish Times has dominated the cartooning scene here for as long as anyone can remember. There are a number of factors for this, one is the limited number of publications offering a space to commissioned cartoons (and illustration in general) but the main being that he is just so damn good! He has now being drawing cartoons for The Irish Times for 4 decades and he talks about his career and process in this piece on their site. And here is a short film about Martyn by John Callaghan.

Congrats Martyn!
